Just a stunning shift over the last year. On 10/6/2023, the Islamic Republic was in the strongest position they had ever been. They had control of the largest and best armed proxy militant forces in the Middle East (Hezbollah, Hamas, Iraq militias, Houthis), they were flush with cash from oil sales and eased sanctions, they had stabilized the Assad regime, they had built up a stronger military alliance with Russia, and they had retreated their nuclear activities. It seemed like they were destined to dominate the region for decades to come. The world was doing almost nothing about it. Then one of their proxies launched the 10/7 attack on Israel. Their other proxies soon joined the conflict. This turned out to be a fatal error. Now a little over a year later, Hamas and Hezbollah have been decimated and most of their leadership is dead. IRGC capabilities in Syria and Iraq have been diminished. Their own military strength has been exposed as Israel took out most of their air defenses in a matter of hours. Russia has withdrawn substantial portion of their forces from Syria limiting the military edge. And now opposition forces are taking back large chunks of Syria from Assad and his forces are in total disarray. More importantly, the next US admin is committing to restoring the economic pressure to cut off the regime’s ability to fund terror throughout the region. We can only hope that the right people take this opportunity and it leads to a free Iran, a free Syria, and a better future for the region.
