I think this gets to part of the disconnect here. There is a fair debate over H1B visas. Such visas aren't going anywhere, but the salary minimums will likely go up under the Trump administration to try to shift the type of jobs they are being used for. I think O-1 visas do not have nearly the same level of abuse. But with all that said, a majority of the founders/innovators behind the biggest advances in recent history were immigrants or from immigrant families. You aren't going to convince people who have watched the value develop that legal immigration is bad. It's understandable why people who came here and have added enormous value would take such suggestions personally. You can convince people that the system is being abused, that some of the immigrants being admitted now aren't assimilating well, and that we should do more to vet those who come here. It's also fair to say that many Americans don't trust the federal government's ability to reform the system after their complete failures at the border and the impact those failures have had on regular Americans. Getting that under control by deporting those who do not have a right to be here and are not adding value (or causing harm) should be the priority. That will restore a level of trust, and then you can have a real debate about the right approach/limits on both work visas and legal immigration. https://bird.makeup/@elonmusk/1872860577057448306
