So in the last few days we have a case of a Neo-Nazi plotting to assassinate the Republican President and a declared socialist trying to murder the Democrats Governor of Pennsylvania. These things may seem distinct, but they aren’t. We have an environment where people are increasingly selling and trying to normalize hate against basic social structures, which inevitably serves to justify political violence. The Neo-Nazis who claim Jews control the government and are responsible for every bad thing are no different than the left-wing anarchists who claim the rich or capitalists control everything and are responsible for every bad thing. The only distinction is where they aim their hate; but these groups are both threats to our society if not actively rejected and marginalized. They all seek to justify murdering CEOs, firebombing dealerships, assassinating political leaders etc etc. Unfortunately too many in positions of power and authority have taken to encouraging or using that hate when it’s convenient without realizing the consequences of mainstreaming the extremists behind it. I’m not saying both sides are the same or equal in this. It obviously varies and that’s a pointless debate. I am saying that it’s bad for everyone and responsible people on both sides should speak up.
