I remember a specific interview on cable news where a guest explained that the reason protests were fine while they otherwise insisted on social distancing for everyone (inc closing businesses, schools, cancelling graduation, limiting visits to sick relatives, and even limiting the number of people at a funeral) was that racism (or police misuse of force) was a bigger immediate threat than the pandemic. That moment was so revealing because it was obviously an insane thing to say/believe, but it became a common talking point.

The whole "it's safe to go out and protest white supremacy instead of COVID-19"' is what broke the normies. Their kids lost a year of their lives and they were told we're all in this together. CDC comes out and says yes you should actually food the streets despite this killer virus and protest George Floyd. That was it. That's all of this.
