It was actual essentially to our social function and protecting free speech rules that there was a societal norm that if someone came out and was openly bigoted or evil, they would by shunned and others wouldn’t want to associate with them. Especially when they showed no remorse. Somehow that got confused with people being punished for political opinions or posts from when they were kids, and now instead people think such behavior is worth normalizing and defending. You can now get famous and raise a bunch of money by openly acting like a shitty person because a bunch of people now idiotically have become convince celebrating that behavior is somehow required as a defense of free speech or opposing cancel culture. That does nothing to counteract the attempts to cancel people for regular political views or errors in judgement, but instead incentivizes and normalizes terrible behavior.
