One other thing people don’t understand because there has been such an effort to ignore one side is that 10/7 was just the culmination of 2 decades of constant terrorist acts and rocket fire. It’s not just about preventing another 10/7, but also putting a stop to a constant state of war/terrorism/rockeys. The media has completely blacked out the reality of Israelis (maybe outside of some minimal reporting on hostages). I was talking to a teacher in Jerusalem the other day. Her kids have grown up used to going to bomb shelters regularly and the government did little about it because it was the accepted norm for regular rockets to be fired from Gaza. Something no other country would accept, and should have never been accepted. She still has lingering issues from when a Palestinian worker threw a rock at her head 6 years ago because she was walking near where they were working. Around the same time there was a stabbing terror attack at her supermarket. She had to stop letting her eldest go to the bus by themselves because there were several car ramming attacks at nearby bus stations. Israelis have been living in a constant state of war for a long time. The people that expected them to just go back to accepting that as normal after 10/7 aren’t the ones who have to live with those realities or pay the price. In a sane world, Gaza civilians would have been allowed to leave. Hamas’ infrastructure and weapons would have been fully eradicated with global support. And then there could be a path forward without constant terrorism and war. It’s telling because Hamas’s main demand is framed as an end to the war that leaves them in power. But that’s a lie. Hamas doesn’t want an “end” to the war. They admit they don’t. They want an end to Israeli fighting for now so they have a chance to re-arm and restart their terror activities. That’s why any long/term deal must be contingent on demilitarization of Gaza and removal of Hamas.
