The Israeli strike next to the European hospital on 5/13 was the perfect example of how the media has turned the conflict upside down. They treat every Israeli claim with extreme skepticism and every Hamas claim as true until proven otherwise. At the time, Israel did a strike on the outside compound of the hospital. Israel said they were targeting the Gaza leader of Hamas, Muhhamad Sinwar, in an underground bunker. Israel has not had the opportunity to target him before because he usually keeps hostages with him. But that day, he and other Hamas officials had a secret meeting in that tunnel. The immediate reaction from the media and the international community was one of outrage. It was framed as an unjustified strike on a hospital. There was no outrage for Hamas leaders building and hiding out in tunnels used explicitly for military activities under hospitals. Sky News did a whole report denying that there were tunnels there based on expert analysis. The New York Times and other major outlets extensively cited the director of the hospital to claim there were no tunnels, and it was just an excuse to bomb a hospital. Then Hamas admitted to Arab media that the tunnels existed. After that, Sinwar's body and that of other senior Hamas militants were found and identified. We now have video of the tunnel complex right next to the hospital. Everything Israel said was true. They took out the leader of Hamas in Gaza with very limited collateral damage. But anyone who relied on the media coverage last month would have walked away with the opposite impression.
