Chicago organizer Brian Bean and NYU Professor Chenjerai Kumanyika were asked what advice they’d give to Democratic mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani if he had to choose a police commissioner. Brian Bean: “It’s a huge, huge challenge when our side takes on responsibility for managing the capitalist state.” He floated a hypothetical alternative: “What if he’s like… New Yorkers, organize yourselves, take over the factories, and I’m gonna tell the police not to [intervene]?” “What if… instead of showing how good I am at governance, I push the crisis further?” Chenjerai Kumanyika: “I disagree—in a respectful comrade-like way.” “One of the first things Zohran needs to do is explain to his base how mayors don’t have that much power… and prepare them now for the forces that are going to fight [him].” “I’m glad to have the Zohran chess piece… but the coalition is the thing... It’s so dangerous the way that once he’s in it, what it can do to our coalition.”
