This is a job offer from Sicily: $700 per month for a 108-hour week. The first month has no pay, an the $700 is implicitly illegal labour because Italian laws on paper don’t allow those sort of hours/pays. Also, both employer and employee are likely tax dodgers in this kind of job relationship. I left Sicily 21 years ago and ended my last employment contract there 25 years ago. Everyone who knew my employment conditions in Sicily envied me: in the late 90s I was earning the equivalent of $2,500 net in today’s 2026 money – back then a gargantuan amount for a young wagie in his early 20s in Sicily. I was once at a party where we did a wage reveal. Everyone else was earning between $50 and $100 a week, all unlawful and informally at-will. Serendipitously I was last and admitted $600 net a week (it was probably more at that point), lawful and with a for-cause contract. I never silenced a room like that before or after – you could hear heartbeats. None of the guys spoke to me the rest of the evening. Half the girls, including those there with their fiancés, found excuses to chat with me and express admiration for my achievement. When I found my first job in Palermo, the jobless rate for my age group was 64%. That said, as a distant observer I have felt job market conditions improving in Sicily over the last 20 years. Back then no one would have batted an eyelid at a $700-per-month offer. Nowadays people complain about them, and in many places in Sicily jobless rates, wage levels and contractual conditions have been consistently improving. An American 🇺🇸 would still find Sicilian wages beyond ridiculous.
