Contrast these two Heads of State: King Charles III of the United Kingdom is visiting Auschwitz today for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the death camp by the Allies, capping a long career of support for Holocaust survivors and education. President Michael Higgins of Ireland rebuffed critics and insisted on attending a Holocaust Memorial event, notwithstanding his recent appalling rhetoric and the opposition of the Jewish community. Predictably, he used his speech to reference Gaza and Jewish members of the audience were reportedly thrown out of the room for objecting. A few days ago, Ireland adopted the International (IHRA) Definition of Antisemitism, according to which equating the Jewish state and the Nazis is antisemitic. One wonders why Ireland bothered.
