On 27th May 1096, the Mainz massacre took place. It was part of the wider Rhineland massacres, also known as the German Crusade of 1096. Despite imperial orders from Emperor Henry IV to protect the Jewish communities, Count Emicho and his followers defied these commands and carried out a massacre of more than 1,100 Jews in Mainz. The Mainz massacre was the deadliest event in the Rhineland massacres. May their memory be a blessing.
