Relics grew to be seen as a conduit between the physical world here on Earth and heaven. Bones, fragments of clothes, blood, etc of the saint acted as a sort of portal for heaven’s grace. They would be taken into battle to sanctify the army and ensure victory. It grows out of both the pagan tradition and talismans and amulets, as well as the classical traditions of having the gods on your side in war.
