To put it explicitly, the scary thing with Telegram is that it's a very short leap between: 1. "you have control and did nothing" 2. "you have control and didn't do enough" 3. "you have control and didn't do everything we demanded" 4. "you chose not to have control and that's just as bad because you can't do what we demand" I suspect telegram could be at 1.5. Mass surveillance and censorship starts at 3, open source software becomes impossible at 4.
