Bessent said that retirees are not worried about short term dips in the market, which has real "What color is the sky on your planet" energy. Retirees have fixed expenses that don't go down just because the stock market does. I suspect that if my father hadn't died last year, we'd be looking into selling his house, which has been in the family for 95 years, to cover his nursing home bills.
