As a proud @UofMaryland alumnus, I am horrified to learn that my alma mater will be permitting a known hate group that has been banned from other campuses to hold a public celebration on the first anniversary of the October 7 massacre. While the campus Jewish community and its allies in the student body mourn the slaughter of 1,200 innocent men, women, and children in the worst mass murder of Jews since the Holocaust, they will be subjected to a display of pure hate in the center of campus. That’s like letting a pro-Al-Qaeda group hold a celebration on 9/11, or like enabling the KKK to throw a party on the anniversary of MLK’s assassination. It’s just plain wrong. I am inspired by the critical work of @MarylandHillel and of dedicated Jewish student leaders to ensure that Jewish campus life remains as strong and vibrant as it was when I was a student, but I can’t help but wonder how Jewish students will feel walking past this grotesque demonstration in the center of campus, knowing that it is taking place with the administration’s approval. I call on @President_Pines to immediately intervene and withdraw approval from this ghastly event.
