From the Beirut bombings in 1983 to the Khobar Towers in 1996 to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran has been responsible for the murder of countless Americans. The Iranian regime refers to America as the “Great Satan” and marks November 4—the day the U.S. embassy in Tehran was stormed and 50 Americans taken hostage in 1979—as Death to America Day. Every American president for decades, Democratic and Republican alike, has vowed not to permit Iran to develop a nuclear weapon—including by force, if necessary—knowing that America would be its number one target. Israel may have softened the ground for tonight’s airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, but eliminating the regime’s nuclear weapons program is a paramount American national interest.
