I led product for @shop core in the early days. We spawned a new team (7ppl) for an initiative that made absolute sense at the time. They also worked their butt off for 6 months. But then due to many reasons it stopped making sense. At that stage, and in a @tobi review, he killed it. It’s a core reason I still hold stock in Shopify. Because in the moment, it was certainly not an easy call, and involved a lot of pain (sunk cost fallacy). But it was absolutely the right call. Just as it had been to pursue it earlier. Things simply change. ”The discovery of things that did not work”. I get that it creates emotions in the moment. Or that it might not be 100% accurate, all times. But a real asshole would spare your short-term emotions despite thinking you where heading down the wrong path. Convinced otherwise? Share the tech/product argument minus emotions. I get it’s scary towards a CEO at that scale, but trust me he is a geek like the rest of us and the best arguments will win. After all, the details of these ”drive by” shows that he cares and thinks at those levels. So from that lens, it’s notable that the critics here focus on the emotions vs bring forward any strong counter arguments on the tech/product side of things. Lastly, man in the arena + context. Be humble you might not have all context, and certainly not the commitment to brawl it out as long-term in the arena as him. You can quit if you disagree. He has to live with it and be the face for it.
