It’s been a mystery to me since October 7 why so few trans people support Israel. And I think I finally have the answer. The same victim mentality that holds a lot of trans people back is what Palestinian society is based on. I don’t consider myself a victim. I had a difficult situation. I made some hard choices, there was an immense amount of pain, but life needed to go on. In the course of dealing with it, I became a uniquely strong person. But you don’t have to do that, you can wallow in your misery forever. And plenty of my sisters do. You can believe in utopian visions where other people create a society that solves all these problems for you. It’s hard to think of a better example of a perpetual victim than Palestinians. It is insane to carry around the keys to houses that don’t exist because your grandparents lost a war in 1947. They’ve had every chance to build a paradise on the international community’s dime, and they just don’t want to. I think this is actually a really important litmus test. Do you see yourself more in the people that endured and thrived after the horror of the Holocaust? Or the people so bitter, they will sacrifice their own children if it means hurting Jews.
