I don’t have kids, so my work and career will be my legacy. I hope many years from now when the NYT writes my obituary, I’m remembered as someone who tried her best, if imperfectly, to stand against the mob. Someone who used the pain and perspective of being born trans to speak up, even when it was probably smarter to stay silent. And I hope I’m remembered as someone who deeply loved her country, tried her best to represent those values, even when I did not receive them back. I hope that, despite being trans, I’m remembered as someone fundamentally American. And a credit to the country I’ve tried imperfectly to serve in public life.
