Here’s something deeply educational that happened as I was leaving Israel. I’m checking in my luggage in Athens after leaving Tel Aviv. I get to the agent. He says hello. I absentmindedly say, “Shalom,” like I’ve been saying for three weeks. And he narrows his eyes at me, looking at me with something between disgust and suspicion. And I’m like, “Oh, this is why my American Jewish friends hide their Jewishness.”
