One of the strongest arguments for ending self-ID and restoring a transmedicalist standard with clinical and legal oversight? It protects trans women and non-trans women. It ensures trans people get real care, not a medicalization assembly line. And it creates a natural deterrent. Sex perverts aren’t going to sign up for medication that shuts down testosterone and essentially castrates them, permanently damaging the testes. Right now you can just check a box and go into women’s spaces with full legal impunity. Under the system I transitioned under, there is an extensive clinical process. We need to build a culture of real assessment with those providers, with off-ramps from medicalization if it’s not a good fit. The system works when the bar is real.
