I wish I knew the words to try to get other Democrats to understand the truth about Israel. It’s not morally complicated. Islamists hate Jews. They’ve started six wars and six major conflicts since 1948 because they can’t stand living next to them. If you go to Israel and talk to people on the left or the right, they just wanna be left alone. They’re mentally exhausted. They have missiles fired at them all the time, they’re sending their children and war zones, and terrorist attacks happen constantly. They’ve tried in good faith to negotiate over and over, and these leaders like Arafat just waste their time. Since October 7, they have a fairly right wing leader in charge who’s had enough and it’s just going on the aggressive. And it’s getting results more than diplomacy did. Simultaneously as part of this worldwide rise of the right, the Islamist political project has figured out information warfare enough to flood all social media with bots and disinformation about Gaza. So even though Israel’s actions are justified, the horror of war produces distasteful images. Israel, unfortunately constrained with telling the truth, is losing. Part of antisemitism is people, for reasons I don’t understand, are not inclined to give Jews the benefit of any doubt. That is the truth of this situation. And very few people who aren’t Jewish can think critically enough about their history and the power dynamics to see that. And I don’t know how to make it change.
