A busy start to the political week here in Kyiv: Ukraine's prosecutor general, Ruslan Kravchenko, appointed by Zelenskyy last year with backing of his then-chief of staff now accused of corruption Andriy Yermak, has resigned and fled Ukraine after becoming embroiled in a corruption scandal of his own. Kravchenko's appointment was part of Zelenskyy's ultimately disastrous effort to bring Ukraine's independent anti-corruption agencies NABU and SAPO under tight presidential control through Kravchenko's oversight — a move that backfired spectacularly last summer, triggering the country's first and largest public protests since Russia's full-scale invasion. Now Kravchenko himself is facing scrutiny from those very agencies, who've charged several of his subordinates in the prosecutor general's office in an alleged fraud scheme. Before resigning and fleeing, he moved against their directors by signing off charges against them. Zelenskyy has called on parliament to swiftly approve Kravchenko's dismissal.
