We as Jews have always, for thousands of years, struggled with this tension. And we find ways to bring our joy and sadness into each other. There is no wedding without smashing the cup.

It’s hard to transition from Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, to Yom Haatzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, when every day has felt like Yom Hazikaron since Oct. 7. The transition is painful when Israelis don’t feel there’s much to celebrate this year. But one thing we can take from the horrific events is that Jewish sovereignty in our land is something we should never take for granted. And we can and should show our appreciation. Happy Yom Haatzmaut. Am Yisrael Chai. 🇮🇱
