Mapping a spherical surface to a flat rectangle presents the unsolvable challenge of preserving both shapes and sizes of land masses. One of the simplest mappings is to plot latitude and longitude angles onto a uniform grid. Because circles of latitude on the globe become smaller as we approach the poles, this map stretches features in the north and south.
