Today, we made a circumcision for our newborn son. What happened along the way? October 7. I am not a religious man. I don’t observe Shabbat. I don’t wait 6 hours between meat and milk. I don’t kiss mezuzut. I believe that there is Something above us. That, yes. Is it the God from the Bible? I don’t know. Maybe. Who am I to know something like that? But if so many people want to erase my tradition, to eradicate Judaism, to wipe out the nation that I am part of, I will do things out of principle. After October 7, I put a mezuzah on the door of my home. Principle. I stopped telling people that I am from Latvia when I was outside of Israel and people asked me where I am from. Today I say ‘from Israel!’ Principle. I went to hear the Shofar last Rosh Hashana. Principle. And today we held a circumcision for my son. Principle.”
