Israel is the only proper nation-state in the Levant expressing a coherent sense of history, people, language and cultural connection to land of the majority. All others - Lebanon, Syria and Jordan are not. In general, States that were created by receding empires without allowing for self-determination, and so forcing several ethnicities/nations/religions into one state, have generally spent the time since imperial collapse oscillating between civil wars and dictatorships. The transition from empires to nation states - as much as it increased the spread of democracy and rights - has been a bloody process. Still is.
