Those who seek to Balkanize Iran have no understanding of Iran and its rich tapestry of ethnicities and identities that animate its thousands-year-old existence. The concept of identity politics is a western construct wrongly imputed onto Iran. Iranians are not divided by our population’s rich diversity—this is in fact what makes Iran what it is—we are instead united against the Islamic regime that targets us collectively. Unlike in western countries, where minority groups have historically played subservient roles, Iran is not been hierarchically divided by ethnicities. In fact, Khamenei himself (the current supreme leader of the regime) comes from a family of Azeri Iranians. Additionally, many do not understand that the separatist dream is a fantasy of our enemies, such as the Soviets who sought to mobilize Iranians into separating territories so it could use those isolated territories as a launch pad for its attacks against Iran. Before advocating for the Balkanization of Iran, I implore you to understand Iran first.
