Yarden Bibas’s chilling retelling of how Hamas bragged and taunted him about killing his wife and children underscores the barbarism of terrorism that western activists have pretended was nonexistent since October 7, and instead “Zionist propaganda to justify genocide.” “The beheaded babies story was a lie!” How about the killing of babies by bare hands? What of that? The reluctance to acknowledge the barbarism of jihadists is owed to the cognitive dissonance between what they know deep down (that terrorists are terrorists) and what they want to believe (terrorists are liberators, just “resisting western imperialism”). What they want to believe is severely undermined by all the evidence of arbitrary and callous violence that far exceeds the western fantasy of “resistance,” such as killing babies and sexual violence against women—something other former hostages have since testified to having witnessed and experienced. The most telling part of all is that the testimonies of former hostages don’t even serve as the ace in the hole to finally shut down the ignorance of western activists entrenched in jihadist propaganda, because there was something that happened from the very beginning that laid out the truth in plain sight if viewers weren’t cleansing from their minds everything they’d rather not see: October 7. It’s always been right in front of them. The automated mental process of erasing reality and replacing it with fantasy that better fits a political narrative is called ideological subversion. We’re dealing with a generation of the subverted.
