Right when the wastewater dashboard lit up, the coughs walked straight into the aerobics class I was teaching this morning. A teenage girl next to her mom. The girl coughing in sharp bursts. Beside her, her mother, totally asymptomatic. Front row, a mom coughing every 5 minutes. She sounded the worst of anyone in the room. Then a familiar face walks in smiling to say hello. Left eye bloodshot, vessels blown out and fully visible. A few quiet coughs during class told me everything. Behind me a nurse tells her friend a strange story about anxiety and it led to another small story about “during Covid times.” Past tense. She says she used to put her only N95 in the window for the sunlight to kill the germs because there was no PPE. Her friend laughs and says sarcastically “just pour some bleach on it and drink a little too because that will kill that Covid.” I found it particularly odd that all of this said right as this wave lifts out of the schools and rolls straight into the community. I stood at the front of the room instructing, music up, counting out loud, knowing the wave was already in the room with us. I cannot help but look, listen and wonder if I am the only one who sees it happening?
