There has literally NEVER been based Catholicism. Even the Reconquista the Preists were hectoring and berating the Germanic Warlords to surrender and live in peace with the Muslims. that's actually what literally happened. the Reconquista began with the muslims bringing forth a Bishop, Don Opas, who urged Don Pelayo to make peace with the invaders, and to live in comfort. it fell to Don Pelayo to correct the clergyman.
