Even if this were true (it mostly isn’t), that would mean that the tariffs are not going to push consumers to buy domestic instead (and that’s the tariff’s stated purpose). And also, everyone’s retirement accounts are full of stocks in these businesses so you’re hitting people’s retirement. And also, if those businesses are absorbing some of the costs, they have to make that up somewhere and they often are forced to do that through lower investment or reduced hiring. 1) there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Tradeoffs are everywhere. 2) there are a dozen ways tariffs can hurt. Don’t be blind to 11 of them if one of them doesn’t happen to occur in a particular situation.
