If the activist campaign for the Palestinians wasn’t quite so obsessed with erasing the Jews’ story, identity and history - an impulse deeply rooted in Islamic supercessionism and imbibed eagerly by a secularized Western academic version of old-school Christian supercessionism - it would accomplish a lot more for the Palestinians. To add to this thread below on the role of Hebrew as a pillar of pre-Zionist Jewish identity: When Maimonides began suspecting in the 12th century that the deep tolerance of Saladin’s empire would not be the future trajectory of Islam, he gave permission to translate his great Judeo-Arabic philosophical work “The Guide for the Perplexed” so that the Jews of Christian Europe could read it. It was translated, of course, to Hebrew, the international Jewish language, the language in which he’d already written his great codex of Jewish law, the Mishneh Torah, the language every Jewish student everywhere had to be able to read, the most specifically Jewish of Jewish languages. https://bird.makeup/@boxy_ft/1870620222987600220
