It is worth knowing our history, if only because it reminds us that we are now the strongest and safest Jews who have ever lived; that our enemies crash in vain against a mighty fortress; that we are capable, and therefore also responsible; that despair isn't just a luxury we cannot afford in these dangerous times, it is a desecration of the memory of generations of Jews whose blood and sweat and sacrifices gave us our present strength and safety. It is fitting that 2025 begins on the last day of Hanukkah, festival of Jewish strength and confidence. May 2025 be a better and safer year, a year of peace, a year of growing strength and increasing wisdom. May our stolen brothers and sisters be returned to us, even as their pain drives us to chart a new path for ourselves and our broken region. May the evil ones who seek our destruction perish and all the countless innocents who surround them be rescued and rehabilitated in safety and peace.
