This is an astonishing claim that only Arab antisemitism could really allow for. The argument is that Zionism was literally able to empty Baghdad of its vast and ancient Jewish community to the very last man, woman and child, including even its anti-Zionist Jewish intellectuals. And also Morocco and Algeria and Yemen and everywhere else in the entire expanse of the Arab world, up to and including cosmopolitan Lebanon by the 1970s - that Zionism had this power, and widespread, measurable and massive Arab antisemitic sentiment and violence had nothing to do with it. And of course, you’re racist for suggesting otherwise. Imagine making this claim about New York. Would Zionism be able to totally empty New York of every last Jew, every Jew of every persuasion, left and right, Republican gun-owner and Democratic LGBT campaigner, even literally every last Jewish *anti-Zionist* - all pulled to Israel by dastardly Zionist plots? That’s the claim. And the great tragedy is that it totally represents their historiography about us. It is literally what they believe happened. Because there’s no possible way that Israel’s founding could possibly have had any other impetus, because the Arab world is by definition blameless. How do you even have a conversation on history or politics or the future with an intellectual world so utterly infatuated with such inane and incoherent fantasies?
