A learned friend offered some thoughts from the Lubavitcher Rebbe for this Purim. It can be hard to be happy in sad times. But it is precisely in sad times that happiness matters. It is incumbent on us to be happy not only for ourselves, but for those who cannot be happy at this time. If someone cannot fulfill the Torah's commandment to give gift packages on Purim, you can give in their name and fulfill their obligation even if they don't know you're doing it. I learn from these lessons that we have the power to hold someone's place open in the world until they can return to it. Chag sameach.
