America is free to do what it wants with its alliances. But those who want it to cut the alliance with Israel aren’t looking out for America’s interests. This thread below is a good start for laying out the value America gets from an ally as loyal and capable as Israel. It isn’t just sentiment and it isn’t just Congress. The Pentagon loves Israel, too, for entirely pragmatic reasons: It’s more capable and reliable than most other allies. Every dollar sent to Israel is spent in the American defense industry. R&D funding of Israel sidesteps the bottleneck of a centralized and ridiculously inefficient American military R&D system (the Pentagon now basically uses Israel as a cheap, fast, top-shelf R&D shop for missile defense). The alliance with Israel doesn’t require insanely expensive generations-long deployments to allies who pocket America’s protection and then refuse to spend on their own defense. And if America doesn’t have Israel, Israeli capabilities will inevitably be shopped around to others. Also, all the stuff Sean mentions. https://bird.makeup/@seandurns/1907168026853548295
