If this view bears out and if Bibi’s hopes for Trump prove misplaced, then we end up with the same bad results as Biden’s foreign policy but with a weaker America and less reliable West. I’m still holding out some hope that there are some red lines in this administration. That America will ultimately understand Putin for what he is and back Ukraine all the more, that the one thing the Middle East actually needs from America — to prevent a nuclear arms race by knocking out the ayatollahs’ program — will be delivered once it becomes clear Iran won’t take a Libya-style nuclear deal that dismantles its nuclear infrastructure. It certainly looked promising at the start. But then the Trump administration has just seemed haphazard and irresponsible on so many other things — what are the chances foreign policy is being handled by the steady and wise while the tariff policy is such a mess?
