I confess I’m just an ignorant foreigner on this issue. Everything I think I know about the collapse of social capital, community and dating in America I read in a magazine or in the executive summary of some study. I don’t live it. But it’s awfully hard to read an article like this as anything other than another missive from the echoing loneliness that is the present-day American experience. What am I missing? Are Americans really as atomized and lonely as the data and these kinds of articles suggest?
