This is true. And it’s still upstream of the simple point that to be a journalist under Hamas is to engage almost exclusively in propaganda. There is never any critique of Hamas from any of the “journalists” heroicized by Al Jazeera. Actually holding Israeli hostages in one’s home isn’t enough to get you removed from that list. Also, Gaza seems exceptionally saturated by journalists, at a per capita rate that would put to shame some of the most robust democracies. Almost as though this is less any kind of independent journalistic ecosystem and more a wartime propaganda arm. But even putting these concerns aside, yeah, the verbiage around Gaza is consistently and ludicrously ahistorical. “No one ever did [insert some crime or tragedy] like the Jews are now doing” has become a literary genre, divorced from reality but rather in keeping with how antisemites have always talked about Jews. Everything is paradigmatic, fundamental, unprecedented and world-historical. This is moral panic rooted in Christendom’s old, defining anti-Jewish mythologies.
