It’s undeniable: yesterday morning, Hamas launched rockets at Israeli cities from Rafah, Gaza. It’s undeniable: Israel has urged civilians to evacuate Rafah for weeks, and hundreds of thousands have left. It’s undeniable: Hamas holds Israeli hostages in Rafah and using Palestinian civilians as human shields there. It’s undeniable: Hamas leaders were meeting at a known terror hub in Rafah, and Israel targeted them last night in a legitimate airstrike in accordance with international law. However, none of this can ever justify the heartbreaking tragedy of Palestinian civilians losing their lives in the fire caused by the strike. We must always recognize the humanity in Palestinian civilians who are not part of this war. When we fail to see their humanity, we lose our own.
