So many stories of antisemitism go the same way: An act of hate is perpetrated, no one speaks up, and Jew hatred is further normalized. When an Israeli professor was kicked out of her Airbnb in Oxford, England when her host found out her nationality, the company suspended the host and found the guest a new place to stay. The result? The original host apologized for her extreme behavior and expressed empathy: “it is a very emotional situation for me and I have been very affected by it, as I’m sure you and your family must have been too.” Some will call me naive and say she is just trying to get back into Airbnb. Maybe. This is still the best kind of outcome. Not for the haters to be cancelled and punished, but for them to learn and change. And, most importantly, for the cycle of normalization to grind to a halt.
