Several police officers who tried to restore order during the chaos of that night in Amsterdam spoke to Deutch newspaper De Telegraaf. According to the police, the disturbances began after a large group of Maccabi fans arrived at the central train station just after midnight. All sources DENY that the Jewish fans behaved provocatively. “I was there all day and all evening,” said a riot police officer. “I don’t recognize the image that Maccabi fans provoked the violence. On the contrary, when pro-Israel stickers were placed on the roadblock and we explained that it was our national war memorial, everything was removed properly.” A colleague added: “If the entire city is filled with thousands of Israeli supporters and a Palestinian flag is deliberately hung from a window on the Rokin, who is provoking whom?” The speed with which things spiraled that night still astonishes all the police officers interviewed by De Telegraaf. One officer recalled: “Small mobile groups played cat and mouse. They followed small groups of two or three supporters, beat them up, and then disappeared in cars or on scooters. This happened not only in the center but also in other neighborhoods. At that time, we didn’t have an adequate response, especially since we were busy protecting the large group of supporters, who were also at risk of being attacked.” Do you believe us now?
