“Negotiating with psychopaths” — New details revealed of the hostage negotiations from a year ago have been released, with officials saying the process could only be described as "negotiating with psychopaths." It turns out that Hamas insisted that they would only release three-year-old twin sisters Emma and Yuli Cunio. Their mother, Sharon, had to stay in captivity (she was eventually released in the deal, but the twins’ father, David Cunio, remains in captivity). The head of the Mossad insisted that Sharon be released with her children, as it would be traumatizing to separate them. Hamas agreed on a condition, that two elderly women be taken off the release list in exchange for Sharon. This was also unthinkable, as just days before a released elderly hostage was rushed to urgent care. She would have died had she not received immediate medical attention. All three of these women, beloved members of their families and communities, were nothing more than tools to Hamas. On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the world must tell Hamas that they cannot play games with women's lives anymore.
