The first thing we can all do when women speak out about violence they have suffered is believe them. Yet a year after October 7th, so many people won’t listen to the women like Amit Soussana, who bravely stepped forward to tell how she was sexually assaulted in Hamas captivity. They won’t believe experts who reported evidence of sexual assault on the bodies of Hamas’s victims. And they won’t believe eyewitness testimony by those forced to hide on October 7th, while Hamas raped women, girls, and at least one man, who has also come forward to speak anonymously about his experience. We need to believe women—no matter their identities or your politics. We won’t be able to eliminate violence against women if we can’t even admit that it happened.
