Last year, Lake Forest in Illinois displayed a menorah for the 8 nights of Hanukkah in their main Market Square for the first time. This year, the city has decided to only allow the menorah to be displayed for a few hours on the night of December 29th. People come together around the holiday season to share love, appreciation and respect for one another and their distinctive cultures. Not only does removing the menorah, a symbol of hope and resilience, silence that very important message, but it also sends a nefarious message: that Jewishness is something to be hidden away. I feel sad for the Lake Forest community today.
