Americans choose to join the army, volunteering to become soldiers and fight overseas. In Israel, military service isn’t a choice, it’s mandatory. And more than that, it’s a necessity. Israel can’t afford not to have soldiers. We all witnessed what happened on October 7 when the army isn’t strong, efficient, or fast enough. I wish Israel didn’t need soldiers. I wish I didn’t have to watch my friends and family risk their lives. But Israeli soldiers fight to survive, to defend their country, and to protect their people. They don’t go to war for glory or because they grew up idealizing it in video games. The fact that they’re being hunted and arrested abroad is scandalous. No one arrests American soldiers vacationing in Japan or Portugal, do they?
