“My Asaf, You were like a father to me, With endless generosity, care, and love. Your huge heart no longer beats, And my broken heart can no longer bear it. Thank you for everything you have been and done for me. I love you endlessly.” These heartbreaking words were shared by former Israeli hostage Mia Schem on Instagram following the tragic death of her uncle. Assaf Ben David, Mia’s uncle, took his own life over a year after going to the Nova music festival to search for Mia. He witnessed Hamas’ atrocities firsthand and fought tirelessly for her release. While the world has moved on from October 7th, we must remember the lives forever shattered by that day. Survivors of trauma bear its weight for the rest of their lives, often without the support they desperately need. Assaf leaves behind his family, including his two children.
