In the first phase of the deal, Hamas informed Israel that eight hostages would be returned dead. Out of the 73 remaining hostages, 36 are believed to be dead. On October 7, Hamas murdered Israelis—and because that wasn’t enough, they kidnapped their bodies, depriving their families of a dignified burial and the chance to grieve. To deepen the torment, Hamas refuses to disclose which hostages are among the dead. Hamas abducted corpses and held them for 16 months as bargaining chips. Hostages are not mere currency for negotiation.
