Two days ago, our world lost a great hero, a Middle East peace advocate, and an authentic voice for good. Nita Lowey was a Jewish Democrat who served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 32 years. She was a powerhouse in Congress and was the first woman to head the House Appropriations Committee. Nita was also a staunch Zionist who challenged both Democratic and Republican voices to take a more bipartisan approach when it came to humanitarian support for Israel. She often talked about how she felt no tension between loving the country and criticizing its government out of her desire to see it live up to the highest moral standards. As described in a recent statement by her family, Nita was “a public servant in the truest sense, [who] was guided by the Jewish core value of "Tikkun Olam," repairing the world.” Nita Lowey was an inspiration for us all. Her legacy and story must fuel the next generation of Jewish leaders and fuel our commitment to building a better world.
